History

The Right to Life League is America’s first pro-life organization. Loosely formed in 1967 and incorporated in 1969, the RTLL’s charge was to stop the passage of the Therapeutic Abortion Act in the state legislature of California. When the law went into effect anyway, the RTLL shifted its focus. The result of this shift began with RTLL establishing its first pregnancy hotline center in 1971. This concept of service and education was in the vanguard of pro-life thinking across the nation. In the first 20 years, nearly one million students, teachers, clergy and parents were educated through the RTLL’s Speaker’s Bureau. Millions more were reached through television and radio interviews, newspaper articles, debates and editorial rebuttals. In addition, over five million pieces of pro-life educational materials have been distributed to individuals, groups, schools, libraries and churches nationwide. In 1972, the RTLL published the first pro-life high school educational book available in the country, entitled “Love For Life”. Shortly thereafter, the League was asked to teach a pilot program in high school classrooms. This became our Sex, Love and Choices program.
